What is the best smelling wood to burn surrounded by an outdoor firepit?

Cedar and pine are both very fragrant. You can't (at smallest shouldn't) burn pine indoors because too much creosote will build up in your chimney and flue. This is not a consideration outdoors. Don't burn any bits and bobs of pressure-treated lumber because it gives stale toxic fumes.

Whatever you own access to. Seriously.

Pines have pitch when within some cases can be quite nice. The Southwest's Pinyon pine is markedly nice.

Cedar is good too.

Fruit tree wood close to apple is fine.

Soft woods like cottonwood are stinky.

So if you don't hold access to a nice pitchy pine, then dance with a easier said than done wood.

Sandal wood..wouldn't that be nice..sigh.
Answers:    I also like the smell of an oak fire. Wild cherry wood and pecan wood also smell great.
