I am building a couple of raised vegetable bed ( 5 x 12 feet) out of cedar. They are on a grassy slight slope so the they are about 15 inches vast on one long side and 24 inches deep on the other. I own limited funds to spend to crowd the beds. So first I stipulation to fill the bottom 8- 12 inches on the insightful side. With what? Stones? Cheap soil? And then I want to lay down a good soil mix nearly 12 inches deep. ( Would 8 or 10 yard fill it?)I enjoy never been unworried with the 'screened topsoil' or the lots of soil, manure or compost bought at Home Depot I own gotten in times past. I want really good rich soil. I hold seen screen topsoil advertised for in the region of 26-28$ a yard. So doesn`t matter what I get will be a big investment...
Answers: Each bed is roughly 2 and a half cubic yard. I'd use the soil you have, and find a contiguous horse barn. Ask to take away some of their elder manure mass (free, composted manure) and mix that in at 50% near your soil, and added soil if you need it. You can pull that in multiple loads within your car. Get some big buckets!
My untested soil was a bit too clay, so I also used coarse (non-beach) sand, to loosen it up. You can also use perlite or peat moss (peat is expensive, though).
I can with the sole purpose speak for what I would do. I would fill the insightful end beside just some unamended dirt. Based on the dimensions you give, you'd need approx 3 to 3.5 cubic yard of topsoil per bed. I recommend checking craigslist for cheap topsoil and you could even place an add yourself.
