Put straw around the plant to hang on to the berries off the ground. You should be getting runners, which create fresh strawberry plants. The blooms will turn into strawberries.

Watch for snails, they love strawberries! Egg shells around your plant should protect them. Snails won't crawl across eggshells.

Answers:    No you can let them basically lay on the ground just as long as you don't enjoy ants or other critters in your patio. That's what I do and my strawberries are big and delicious.
