For the past two years something has be eating my strawberries before I can pick them. I know it is not deer, but I am wondering if squirrels and/or chip munks will chomp through fruit?
rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, mice, possibly turtles, tortoises, and birds Slugs will eat them adjectives up. Some people put out a lid of beer to kill them.
Turtles can drink a few.
Squirrels definitely. I used to have a strawberry patch and I would enjoy my eye on which ones would be ready to pick and the next morning those nice red ripe ones would be gone. I formulate a chicken-wire fence to surround the patch and then a chicken-wire roof that I could efficiently open. Problem solved. If they get too ripe or are touching the ground afterwards possibly slugs or snails would eventually get to them. The only article that eats my strawberries is birds. they leave the bottom partially of the berry that's laying on the straw (or dirt if you don't straw) and just bite into the partly that is facing up. They normally in recent times take one bite if they tried one that was nowhere close by ripe and eat the whole top partly if it was close to ripe. You can put up a barrier (like row covers next to mesh) but you have to remove sometimes or else the bees can't go and get to them to pollinate, so it's a bit of a double edged sword.
Birds and squirrels! Could be possums or raccoons.
Dogs do sometimes. I've seen a dog eat strawberries back. Have you considered it might be snails? They love strawberries
Answers: Squirrels and any type rodent species love them... Here in Florida I have no smaller number than 20 people that actyually see the squirrels eating thiers..they give the impression of being to eat them just as they obtain red..they know thier fruit well.
Eastern gray squirrels and fox squirrels are omnivorous. This means they will devour anything available. Both species take advantage of seasonal food sources. Both species get through summer fruit such as strawberries, grapes, apples, thornapples, serviceberries, raspberries, and cherries. Other summer foods include green corn, green nuts and maple seeds. Spring foods include elm seeds, tree buds, corn, insects, mushrooms and other fungi, and any stored nuts they can find. Squirrels will munch through bird eggs, fledglings or even adult birds if they have the fortune. Squirrels and other rodents will chew on bones such as shed deer antlers or skeletal remains. They gain calcium and other minerals from these sources.
Do you have turtles in your nouns?my pet turtle eats them like crazy.
