Hello,
I would like to lay sod this spring however I surmise my yard is what one would considered shallow as one can see tree roots from a severely big old tree. My patio pools water and I be hoping to till, level, make a payment dirt, nutrients ( i.e worm poo, manure) then lay sod. Is this a biddable idea? Also on the tree roots and close to then mushrooms grow huge revolting ones, what time of nutrient am I lacking if shocking big mushrooms grow.
Answers:    Sounds like you will want to put more dirt in your courtyard. I had some sandy soil put surrounded by some low spots on my property. I had lots of Tulip Poplar trees planted. After the bulldozer smoothed it bad about 6 months latter the poplars started to die where the soil be pushed over the standing roots of the poplars. I had to hire a tree cutter to saw the huge trees down. He told me the trees died because of the dirt covering the tree roots. He said equal thing happen to Oak trees.
The big mushrooms are usually a root fungus which you can treat with a fungicide. You might try green manure--which is planting an annual rye near perhaps phalecia for a season-then till it lower than to give your soil more amenable growing conditions. At that time you could stratum your yard while you're at it.
