Please explain how (and which end, pieces, etc.) in a chalice of water in the kitchen that will grow those wonderful houseplants I see them showing on TV...thanks...
Answers: It's the pointy end. Just cut sour about a 2-3 inch section of the pointy bring to a close. Suspend with toothpicks on the edge of the chalice vase/jar or whatever you are using so the pointy end-tip is just contained by the water. Should sprout new roots within a few days, then new shoots will follow. Sometimes you can hold the whole sweet potoato plant and use it if it is small enough. We did this lots times when I was a kid, but I've never shown my girls how to do it. Maybe now is the right time..!
The ending that the stem was attached to is the top. The bottom is usually bigger. Put the sweet potato (bottom side down) in a like-size cup jar, like a used mayo jar, and fill it beside water to the top. They make stunning vines and I have one right now. I love "indirect its hair" (the long vines) around the plant. Looks beautiful and thick. Mine also stays outside, so they must be summer-hardy, too. A sweet potato make a cheap, easy-to-maintain, healthy, beautiful vine plant. Put four to six toothpicks around the circumference of the potato, and suspend the pointed back in a container of water (I used a coffee can). Make sure it get sunlight, and roots should develop in about 1-2 weeks, beside stems and leaves sprouting soon afterwards. It really is a pretty, easy-to-grow plant. It may even flower for you if the conditions are right. Good luck!
