when to plant sweet corn from seed surrounded by the garden and some tips
Answers: Any seed catalogs and your local garden center can speak about you what planting "zone" you live in. That's usually determined by how oodles (on average) actual growing days your area have. You then have need of to see what variety of seed do best in your region. The core catalogs, etc. can tell you how oodles days are necessary to return with from planting to your table. Also check with the extension service contained by your county. If they are as saavy as mine, they will be able to provide soil trialling kits which are pretty cheap. You post the soil sample to the address on the apparatus - usually to a state university agronomy lab- and in a minute they will analyze your soil and tell you what to append to the soil to give those corn seed a good start. It isn't rocket science...you in recent times need to do somewhat homework for the best results for all the work a garden take. If you've never planted sweet corn, you also need to consider how you will button the 4-legged critters who also love corn - like raccoons. They are the worst! So if they live within your neighborhood, you better prepare for them as well. Sweet corn doesn't grow practical as tall as enclosed space corn. The ears develop much closer to the ground and the stalks are not quite as sturdy. A hungry, inefficient raccoon will push the stalk over, take a few bites out of respectively ear and move on to destroy more plants. If this sounds like a problem where on earth you live, look into Have-A-Heart (brand name) traps or get yourself a shotgun and a few dutiful dogs. Good luck...and don't pick the corn till the water is boiling on the stove.
I'm not sure where on earth you live but here in the Dakotas you can plant anytime between Memorial Day and the Forth of July. Corn requirements warm soil to do ably. RScott
