what can I do if I don't want to pay someone to take a look at it?
Can you pass a bit more information? What exactly happens? It is an underground sprinkling system you are talking nearly?
Is it an "On Demand" pump or one near a pressure switch? An "On Demand" will start as soon as you turn it on. A pump with a pressure switch will not start until the pressure drops, usuall around 30 psi. If the system has a timer control box, at hand are several things to check: 1. Make sure the "on" trip is still in place; 2. Turn the overide switch to on and see if the pump works; 3. Turn off the breaker to the control and check for loose or adjectives wires; 4. Need a voltage meter for the next one - remove the cover from the relay box on the pump and check for voltage being present. Make sure the meter is set for 220/240vac. If adjectives of the above check out okay, you may have a burned out motor. Shut the power off to the pump. With the cover rotten, disconnect one wire from the load side of the relay. Turn the meter to Continuity (Resistance) setting; put one verbs on the disconnected wire, the other probe to the nouns wire still connected to the relay. If the needle moves, the motor meandering is alright. No movement of the needle indicates an open circuit within the motor winding - new motor needed. Is at hand current on?Check fuse and switch.if current is there, check the motor sound. Some nouns indicates, rewinding of motor required.Check the level of water surrounded by well and foot valve.
Answers: i assume you own a volt meter. You need to check the voltage from inside the pump (usually a little door beside one screw holding on a cover)remove cover, carefully touch the tester to the wire terminal. If there is no current then the circuit is stale or there us a short. If current is there later there is something wrong with the pump and if you enjoy any experience with pumps it may be cheaper to replace it than to call someone within to fix it. After its replaced you'll have to prime the pump if you are using well hose. Thats a whole different question.
Good luck
