in the winter i hold big, twisted lumps of soil/mud in my garden, however contained by the summer this problem does not occur, what is the object for this and how do i solve this problem?
Answers:    Sounds like you might be on clay. Try and verbs lots of organic stuff within; ie: composted straw and manure, fern mold to lighten it and relief it retain moisture. Tedious process unless you really like gardening but ably worth the effort. Cover near a mulch if you dont like the look of it:ie;barkchip on your borders.
Sounds resembling this could be a problem with repeated freezing and thaw under raining conditions. It's hard to say-so, exactly, because you didn't give your location.

If you find it unsightly, newly cover with fine mulch. This will also serve soil retain moisture in the furnace months and provide a weed barrier.
