I live in a duplex, we enjoy a small back patio. It is big enough for the dog to run and be comfortable, but he digs holes not to attain out , we think to hold cool in summer, anyways, I'd close to to put down some mulch or small river rocks around the edge of the barrier, Is mulch bad for dogs If he decide to chew on it.
I WAS TOLD THAT DOGS DIG BECAUSE THEY HAVE SEEN YOU OR SOMEONE ELSE DIGGING..I REALLY BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE MY 3 DOGS DIDNT DIG UNTIL THEY SAW ME IN THE GARDENS DIGGING...THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET THEM TO STOP DIGGING AT THE FENCE LINE IS TO LAY DOWN METAL FENCING, LIKE CHICKEN WIRE, OR THAT OTHER THICKER WIRE AND THEY WONT DIG AFTER GETTING TO IT THE 1ST TIME...OTHER DOGS WILL DIG IF THEY'RE BORED TOO...I HAVE EVEN PUT UP A TETHER BALL POLE W/ THE BALL AND THEY WOULD PLAY WITH THAT....I ALSO HAVE OTHER TOYS AND A POOL DURING THE HOTTER MONTHS....I WOULDNT USE THE MULCH OR THE ROCKS BECAUSE WHEN HE DIGS THOSE WONT STOP HIM......GOOD LUCK

Your dog is most probably digging because he is bored. You need to achieve him some toys and you need to confer him exercise every day by walking him. A dog who is newly out in the courtyard all the time is not healthy even if you say nearby is room for him to run.

I don't know about the mulch. It depends on what type you buy.
You will enjoy to check the bag the mulch is crammed full in (if that's how you buy it) and see if in that are warnings going on for it being poisonous to pets.
Answers:    Some mulch in our nouns is treated or colored, so check the bag or ask when you dance to purchase it. Many dogs dig because that is to say what they are bred to do originally-terriers, jack russells, rat terriers, etc. were originally bred to run after vermin contained by their dens underground. Hence the digging. One thing you can do is designate a doggie digging nouns in your patio. Just take a small subsection, fill next to sand, and bury some toys, bones, etc. and encourage them to verbs there. If you see them verbs in another nouns, take them over to the designated digging nouns and show them a buried toy and praise them. If you put the digging area contained by a shaded spot, he can also dig a nice, cool spot to lay surrounded by!
