i have to dogs. i want to plant grass contained by late spring 08. supposedly i can acquire free wood chips from the city. my backyard has no grass. when it rain, there's mud everywhere. i'm worried about the mushrooms the mulch will produce. will it damage my dogs if they eat it? also, will i own to remove the mulch before planting? i only want something that will keep the mud at inlet. my dogs are inside/outside dogs.
Answers: The mulch chips should be fine. They only grow fungus if they obtain wet for a long length of time and are undisturbed - next to your dogs romping on them I wouldn't worry something like mushrooms. Be aware that they'll probably also chew the chips - a lot of dogs consider these just game as chew toys.
I lived on a busy street and have two active boxers. They have to have a fenced surrounded by area. I fenced surrounded by half the courtyard and put the whole courtyard in wood chips. I have the same problem as you...mud,slop, dirty dogs. The wood chips be great. I never had any noxious mushrooms and the dogs never got sick. I kept that nouns in wood chips and have my grass and garden outside of that area. I kept the chips poop free, and get a new nouns of wood chips every year. When one boxer passed on and the other was infirm, she just meander around the yard so I took down the barrier, rototilled the area and put within sod. The sod was on such substantial organic objects that I hardly have to care for it at adjectives. So, my experience with wood chips be positive.
