Should Herbs be grown in a pot or directly in the soil?
or is it different for different herb?
The small leafy herb grow fine either way. Bushy herb like Rosemary will work in a sizeable container, if they are kept trimmed back, but do better in the ground. which ever you are okay near they do well in any passageway.

I've grown them in direct soil with no problem. Growing anything within a pot requires more watering.
I had a old wheelbarrow and grew herb there. Gave a nice decorative touch to the backyard.
Answers: It is different for different herbs. Any kind of mint you want to cause sure you contain or it will overtake your garden in no time - it spreads like crazy! Larger perennials do moral in large containers or surrounded by the ground, if you need to move them when its very cold containers work great. I prefer smaller number containers and more plants in raised bed, to many containers can take on a especially cluttered look if you are not careful. Raised beds, even a short time ago a foot, work great! They really save your back a large amount and are easy to amend, water, and provide great drainage. It also make sense - when you have raised bed you do not walk on the planting area which can greatly compress it and produce problems.
I do mine in both. Perennials I do in the soil, annuals I do surrounded by pots.
