Is there anything I can do to cheer up their spreading habit?
Answers:    According to Garden Gate magazine within are three types of Clematis: A, B, and C. How to prune depends on which type you have. Group C get cut down near the ground contained by the Spring. Group B gets trimmed at the tips and thinned out where on earth vines overlap. Also remove dead and broken branches. Group A never get trimmed all the passageway down, just cut pay for the tips.
Good luck!
I normally trim the runners close to the substructure, but leave the key vine.. letting shoots grow further up... the whole piece looks dead and horrible contained by winter but comes back superlatively in spring... also check paul james website 'gardening by the yard' it's chock-a-block with awesome info for the green thumbers !
