in their nouns? I knew someone who have 6 feet of snow for a couple months and his wander around in a cold unheated tool shed and did purely fine for the winter...no bulb at all? They seem just fine. I'm raise chickens to save money on eggs. With nurture and having to boil their area I wonder if I am really abiding money..... would like your thoughts.
Answers: I can sympathize near your wondering if you are saving money raise your own. I have have a flock of Rhode Island Reds for 25 years and while they do not lessen the expense of eating eggs they are a delight and provide many benefits beyond their wonderful eggs. They provide droppings for the garden and do a great job of keeping multiple insects at bay.
The lone reason to join a bulb during the winter months is to increase egg production. Poultry egg production is tied to the number of hours of daylight. I have found they produce best next to 16 hours of light per time and have set a timer on a single 60 watt bulb to provide an extended morning.
As long as your birds have polite shelter during the coldest temperatures they will do fine. Remember to hold on to their water thaw. They will perish quickly if they do not own fresh water. Good Luck.
I live surrounded by a cold Northeastern town. Our chickens have shelter to bring back out of the wind, and plenty of hay to nest surrounded by. They have never have a bulb and have be laying the best eggs for in the order of 6 years.
