Overwintering veranda plants? if I have plants which would know how to survive winter in...

if I have plants which would know how to survive winter in the ground, will they be fine surrounded by pots too? We usually do get straight frost for a few weeks. I don't enjoy a good space inside and it may in actuality be too warm in that. Suggestions?

Answers:    A plant's roots are not as hardy as the stems and crown of the plant. Roots exposed to temperatures below freezing can be shabby or killed. Pots, especially small pots expose a plant's roots to heat lower than they normally would encounter when planted surrounded by the soil. If you can not move your potted plants to an area to be exact protected from the extreme cold, then you must insulate the pots & roots from the cold. Group adjectives your pots in one nouns and pile mulch around the pots. Or use some other suitable material to insulate the roots from the cold.

It's all roughly speaking insulating the pots, mulch definitely works but could be pretty messy on a veranda. You could use layers of a cheap yard goods but you'll probably have to throw it away contained by the spring. You could also get some bigger (than the pots) containers & put mulch, soil, gravel or material in between the pots.
