Orange plant dying when taken indoors? We have a tree.. I believe it is an orange tree,...
We have a tree.. I believe it is an orange tree, or tangerine / some other citrus.
In the recent past, we would keep it inside... I believe it grew rather elevated, but it was very skinny, and have very few leaves.
It started to die, so my grandma chopped it and put it outside... when summer came, it really thrived, as it grew bushy, beside nice, healthy leaves.
Winter came, and we took it indoors. It be alright for the most part, but when spring was approaching, it started to lose its leaves and die bad again. Back to being a barren stem.
Now that it's outside and summer has come, it's starting to really grow hurriedly again. I don't want it to die again, and that seems to happen everytime we lift it indoors. It does snow here, but the "average low" for January appears to be 0.1 celsius. (33 Fahrenheit)
Is this normal? If not, what's going on, and how do I prevent it?
Thanks
I make a clean breast that I'm no citrus expert, but I would think it might be happier outside all the time fairly than just over summer. Having said that I come from an area that does not win as cold as yours,(ie what is snow?lol), but perhaps keeping it out but in sheltered place where on earth it can get some winter sun might be ok. Citrus need lots of sun. Also impart it a feed; citrus food from a plant nursery might do it good and backing it flower and then you may get fruit! And don't over sea it too much I believe they don't like wet foot. Hope this helps.
Ok I live surrounded by Australia so my advice is useless as our temps arent as low, but these guys are fantastic and helpful http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/ total loads of garden enthusiasts that will know what exactly what your citrus is and what it needs, good luck don't bring it indoors if you don't own to. a mature orange tree should withstand those temperature if you could cover the plant with cloth all around.
Answers: dont take it inside..achieve a plant covering for it to keep it from getting frost on it..it dies because its not an indoor plant...it wants to be outside
