Can I prune back my 3 foot tall orleander? I planted two outside surrounded by the ground last tip out, and now after this winter the leaves are adjectives dead and drooping. Can they be save? I live in zone 8.
Answers: Absolutely oleander can be cut backbone, but don't do so until the new growth starts coming out. Some of the branches near dead leaves may still be alive and may put on exotic leaves in the spring. (Soon surrounded by your area.) I know it's messy to look at in a minute, but waiting will insure that you cut out only the insensible branches.
Yes, they will recover. If it be me, I'd wait until spring to see what is alive and doing in good health.
By the way, contained by one of the neighborhoods near us a neighbor cuts theirs 1/2 down EVERY year and the plants are bushy and fine. Loaded with flowers. I love driving down that street respectively summer just to see the oleander.
