Answers: 1/4" of sand on top of the soil will prevent hatch. Adult gnats will die, new kids won't be born. They are usually followed by spider mites, see for tiny spots on leaves and fine webs. Spectracide 3 contained by 1 spray will kill the mites.
Possibly aphids.....use for a time soapy water and spray them down, it will suffocate them
