Winter Rye. I live in California too and we hired a great guy who take care of our courtyard once a week. Every fall, he cuts rear the grass as low as he can, then sows Winter Rye grass and fertilizer. We hose every day for 5 minutes at respectively station of the sprinkler cycle and in around a week we have a blanket of green grass. We cut the marine back once the grass is established. When the weather warm up again, he does the same piece, this time sowing warm weather grass which is more drought resistant. Our gardener lone costs $35 a month which is nothing really for a months worth of work. And contained by CA, grass needs greatly of maintenance, it might be worth it.
