Answers: It's a toadstool; under NO circumstances should you munch through it. These commonly occur when it's be rainy outside for several days, near wind interspersed to blow spores around. If you enjoy children or pets, you need to remove the toadstools so that nobody is tempt to eat them; be sure to use gloves and dispose of them surrounded by a plastic bag so that you don't shutting up with MORE of them!
Never, never, NEVER guzzle a fungus of any sort unless you KNOW what it is; many are lethal if eaten, and masses more will make you WISH you be dead!
It is some type of fungus, could be a little different types of mushrooms from your description. There are a lot of look-alikes. Might be poison, I don`t know not, even if it isn't, it might get that road as it ages. Whatever you do, don't eat it. You can find some pretty well brought-up books on identifying mushrooms at your local library or Borders, Hastings or Books-a-Million. Mushrooms and other fungi usually pop up within a lawn where on earth there have been a tree removed, or died, along the roots. There isn't much you can do to brand them go away, they will disappear when their food source is gone. Just look at them as nature of cool wildflowers.
