I have a sunken wager on yard beside an area i.e. largely clay (I'm working on improving it next to compost, peat moss, mulch, etc.). That area is approaching a very shallow pond/bog during the spring thaw out but becomes bone dry within summer without supplementary watering (which I try to avoid) because of season maples. I'm wondering what sort of shade/partial shade plants can survive both wet foot and drought. There's a lot of warning out there for plants that love it damp or can survive it dry, but not much about plants adapted to both extremes.
I'm within mid-Michigan, zone 5. Any natives (perennials or small shrubs) that people can recommend for shade/partial shade next to lots of root competition. I don't want to just plant some invasive groundcover here (I already spent a huge amount of time and energy removing myrtle, ivy, and lamuim). Ideas?
Thanks!!
