I have a tall and wide-ranging hedge which is, I believe , known as a Leylandi. It one and only has a few inches of greenery on the outside of my side of the hedge (so if I trim stern more than a few inches I see a patch of brown ). If I were to narrow the evade by cutting the side back by a foot or two, I know I would stop up with a completely brown-sided hedge. But would greenery grow again eventually on the side? If yes, when would be the best time of year, if any, to do the position, and how long would it take for my side of the hedge to grow green-sided again? ( I should point out, maybe, that the the other side of the hedge presses against my neighbour's wooden fence, so I don't feel there is much greenery , if any, on that side. But I should not wish to touch that side of course)
Leylandii does not grow final again if cut into the hard wood.If your cutting into soft wood than yes I ponder not.
Is it 35' tall yet?
If you cut back to the wood it will stay baldy. You can trim laylandii all year around. Yes it would step green again. In spring/summer would be best...but they are evergreen.
If you trim it now and then you will avoid this problem.
Answers: See if you can find out for sure whether your put off is Leylandii or something else... Leylandii will NOT green up again after you have cut into old wood. Unless they are kept trimmed twice a year they can become a voluminous eyesore. If your hedge turned out to be Western Red Cedar (which looks similar) then it WOULD grow put a bet on from old wood. Could you take a small branch to a local nursery or look at some pictures on the network for an ID. You can trim evergreens most of the year. Good luck :-)
