Answers: Probably a mixture of wind burn and the compost getting slightly too dry. Whilst they will survive in a pot they thrive planted in the ground.
If it is surrounded by a pot put it in a sheltered position and don't have it surrounded by a terracotta pot (they dry out too quickly) - have it in a glazed ceramic/plastic pot.
Leaves artificial won't get much better this year. But when they regrow next year they will be fine.
Scorch and getting too dry are the culprits.

They love organic matter and moist soil.
