We had a 10x14 cedar deck (all but the posts) beside stairs put up last May- we live surrounded by Minnesota, so we only used it give or take a few 6 mos. total so far. There are three front support posts and a side support post by the stairs. Within the last few week, the deck sways when you waddle on it (or just shake from side to side) and the post by the stairs is significantly bowed. We are worried- Is is average? Is it structual sound? first time home buyers and deck...Any oblige or ideas appreciated.
Answers: If it sways, it is not safe and sound.
If weight is not evenly distributed, but massed to one side or the other, it would eventually sway to the ground.
I would contact the contractor who built your deck and see what he is of a mind to do for you. It should last longer than a year.
The bowing of the side post is evidence that it is supporting too much of the overall bulk of the deck.
Take plenty of pictures in the event you own to take your builder to small claims court.
