Is my Red Oak Dead? I recently planted a 20 gallon red oak about a month ago....
I recently planted a 20 gallon red oak about a month ago. We lately had a 4 day crisscross storm in which the tree was blown over (even though it be staked very well) I uprighted the tree and re-staked it. The wind wa so discouraging for four days that all of the leaves were pointing sideways and very soon have all turned brown. Did this slay the tree or is there still hope? Thanks!!
Answers: Probably not. Leaves can be completely killed by meander burn (which it sounds like). I doesn't mean the tree itself is dead.
Continue to treat it as a contemporary planting. Water it using an open-ended hose, laid on top of the root ball, and turned onto a trickle (water flow roughly speaking the width of a pen), and let it turn for about 30 minutes. Do that every 5-7 days when it's hot, and about every 2 weeks when it's cool. (After the first frost - you're done watering, and shouldn't own to in future years unless there's a severe drought...contained by which case once or twice in a season can support it through dry periods. The watering this year is just to attain the tree established)
It should eventually put out a new set of leaves - they will be smaller than normal. But it the tree does okay, the leaves next spring should be fine.
I think your fine ...Keep checking different branch tips by seeing if they break or bend. I bet they bend throughout the subsequent seasons and comes back subsequent spring.
Probably new leaves by Sept / Oct.
