No matter what time of year it is my mums other start turning black and crispy. It starts on the stalk and eventually the flower turns black as well. I hold used fungicide and it helps -for a while.

I've grown Mei-Kyo , and 'Sheffield'. They are good-looking and reliable. 'Clara Curtis' is a great plant . Blooms July-Sept (maybe Oct, if conditions are right). The others are nose-dive bloomers.
ps : Joanne, those are the ones she's having trouble near . They ARE disease-prone , and not as carefree as that site purports them to be . The diseases are soil-borne , so will hang on to coming back . Better rotten going with something else.

How to Grow:
While you can grow Chrysanthemums from kernel or cuttings, almost everyone buys young plants from their local garden store. They can also be propagated by dividing and separating them.
Hardy mums obtain their name because they are unproblematic to grow. Like other plants, they reward you if placed in the best location of your garden. But, they also thrive economically in smaller number than ideal conditions.
While mums will grow capably in most parts of your garden, they prefer full to partial sun and dutiful, well drained soil. If you are short on space, place them contained by almost any area and they will grow.
Chrysanthemums hold shallow roots. So, keep them economically watered near the surface. Apply a on the brink fertilizer on a regular basis.
Pinch hindmost the growth to promote a bushy appearance. As fall arrives allow the growth to develop. Switch to a fertilizer complex in Phosphorous to promote blooming and you will be rewarded near big and colorful blooms that will shine in your garden long after your other plants hold succumbed to frost and age.
