Under my grass is thin layer of soil near the remaining being all clay. If I verbs the appropriate hole and place soil in the bottom and sides of the hole, will this be sufficient to plant the sunflowers within?

Thanks in advance!
Answers:    What munificent of sunflowers? Most sunflowers are annuals and not worth transplanting. If uit is a perennial species then they will probably do fine in anything soil you have. Very tough plants.

Dig the hole large. Twice as far-reaching as the rootball. Mix in some amendments into the clay that you take out. Fill within around the rootball. Keep nicely watered. Remember that clay drains slowly so do not overwater or the roots will rot.

I have both annual and perennial (H. tuberosa) sunflowers growing surrounded by decomposed granite, which is probably much lousier soil than your clay. They don't really need much help.
Dig the hole just about twice as deep as you would normally do, consequently add some good soil, a mixture of cow sewage, peat moss, and potting soil. They should be ok. I would wait until fall to transplant them though. if those sunflowers are bigger than a foot high, you chance losing them if you move them now..
