Answers:    I'm guessing it is the type of pan that will hold hose down or mulch. Placing the paper down may be a bit redundant if you already have the container in place. But it most definitely will not hurt the tree.

Just wondering What category of PAN?? anyway.. as long as water can soak through the material after it is ok to do it for it will help prevent weeds from growing up and competing beside the tree to make fruit!!
