I planted individual plants 200mm apart as advised surrounded by garden centre, it grew capably over the spring/summer but has suffered over the winter.

Answers:    Well the plants conspicuously have NOT dried out if you are within UK.
Don't worry, they suffering from shock after transplanting. Come spring they will bush out.

It should grow posterior in capably spring summer time
if not you could by a few smaller versuins of the quibble and cut the root in partially and put it in the gap then that will start growing posterior
