I have just planted a Vine Maple within my yard. I left it within an open area where on earth I found is one places this type of plant likes to be. What I am curious about is the roots. I hear that they grow really long and could easily get knotted up in my sprinkler system pipes. Is this true?
Answers:    That's kinda true.
The tree gets it's it's moniker because it's branches weep toward the ground and root as they touch the ground and become a impenetrable thicket. It grows like a tree and vine adjectives in one. It could tangle up your sprinker pipes however you can curb it's vining tendency by putting a concrete underground wall around it and keeping the branches off the ground. This technique is used on aggressive perennial and grass species . You also have to verbs unwanted seedlings and runners(babies growing from the main root) too.
