Answers: Basil wishes to have a unhealthy mulch around the base of the plant. The stem and leaves are pretty delicate and undemanding to water log. Basil requests to be allowed to dry out between waterings but not enough for the leaves to wilt. However, starchy watering and dirt splashing up unto the bottom of the leaves can cause the plant to die. The overwatering cause stem rot and when the stem rots, the rest of the plant does not receive the nutrients that it needs. Do not dampen basil directly unto the stems but water four to five inches away from the stem and allow the sea to soak in slowly. This is why I recommend a unwieldy mulching.
