Buy some potting soil or manure and plant them contained by that rather than clay soil from your backyard. Make sure to water day by day during hot weather as their roots cannot really spread in a search for hose. If you live where it freezes, keep watered until the ground is totally frozen/ This simply process that the pot needs holes in the bottom so the marine runs out. Strawberries do not like to have their roots soaking contained by water. They get root rot.
Be sure your soil in the pots is sufficiently packed to provide stabilization for the plant, even so loose enough so that moisture is allowed to wet the dirt, later the excess drain away freely.
You don't want the pot of continually hold water. That promotes mold and bacteria to grow. Thats not worthy for the plant. There are special pots designed for growing strawberries. They have holes up and down the sides to allow the plants to spread out. Well drained soil means soil that won't pack down and permit the water run off or stay showery and soggy. A good mixture of potting soil and compost is a good bet. And if you plan to use dirt please use chicken manure. Who wants wacky cow desease? Ha ha. I never use steer manure on plants that I grow to eat. Just contained by case...

mix it next to sand. Also strawberries need a trellis type thing when they acquire bigger so a pot isnt that good for them. put holes in the bottom of the pot

Well draining soil has nothing to do beside the pot.
Potting soils are well draining. It just funds the water can move easily through the soil. Sand, pebbles, vermiculite & perlite are amendments that backing soils drain. They are in every potting soil I've seen. I instinctively like the Miracle-Gro potting mix, plants really do better in it.
There are strawberry pots next to pockets in the sides of them, they're nice but not necessary & can be used for plants bar strawberry. I've had good nouns growing strawberries in a hanging picnic basket.
So the only step you need to appropriate is to use potting soil.
