I have a mango tree which is (I believe) almost 5 years old. It have it's first fruit which looks almost full size but still green (no I don't know it's variety)...I don't know how often to fertilizer or what type to use...also should I protect the tree from birds ? Any info would be appreciated
Answers:    Typically, mangos will grow sans any "help" we humans can volunteer. It sounds like you get lucky and bought a species that isn't prone to fungus. So this is good.

Just give it alone. The birds and the rodents aren't going to eat the fruit until it ripens (becomes softer) and falls from the tree. Mangos can grow REALLY capably sans fertilizer. Don't get your panties into a jam over applying any of this junk! *grin*

If you collect the fruit (pick prior to it becoming TOO ripe) you shouldn't have too much of a bird/rodent problem. If you don't hold a squirrel problem, leaving the fruits on the ground will GIVE you one! Be sure never to bestow ANY of the fruits on the ground. Squirrels or other rodents will FIND and eat adjectives the mangos you leave for them to find.

Throw away the unwanted fruit into a trashcan next to a HEAVY lid, i.e. a metal trashcan. All rodents can get into a trashcan near a plastic lid. Make it as difficult as you can for the rodents to get to these unwanted mangos.

Do you know which species of mango this is? Some hold fruits that are better tasting when they are picked unripe and allowed to ripen away from the tree any in cow dung or a cardboard box, whichever is easier to win.
