We are trying to think what we can put surrounded by the lanscaping to keep them out. We thought of ammonia but possibly it kills the plants. Will mothballs work? Thanks.
Answers: do not use hgouosehold amonia. It will turn the soil sharp and everything will shrivel up and die there. Moth ball work sometimes, sometimes they work for deer too. Black pepper ois a favorite of mine because they learn that uncontrolable sneezing is associated near plants and there is no damage to the soil.
I've also heard that mothballs work, but to put them surrounded by some knee large hose, (socks would be too thick for the odor to come through in good health enough) tie a knot surrounded by the end, and lay them astern and around the shrubs. The point of putting them in the knees high hose is that the odor is concentrated because here are so many contained by one hose, and because they are contained in a sock or hose little dogs (although this is rare) or little toddlers who escape mommy's grasp can't run over and pick a single one up and put it within it's mouth.
