i have put new sod surrounded by at my house in Chicago about 3 weeks ago. My question(s) is:
how normally do i water?
when do i fertilize?
when do i mow it?
Never let it dry out, especially surrounded by this hot time. I would recommend watering throughly at least once a week. If it is really hot, more often. Was the ground fertilized when the sod be put down? If so, you don't need to fertilize again until fall. If it looks flaxen and in need of it very soon, go ahead, but only thoroughly lightly, you don't want to burn it in the warmth of summer. Mow it when it gets to the height that you would customarily mow your lawn, but don't cut it too short...leave a moral three inches.
I would have watered it every morning for at least two or three weeks and than put a bet on it off to 2 or 3 times a week. Never water contained by the mid-day or afternoon you'll roast your grass.
Fertilize it in the fall beside a winterize fertilizer from Scotts or something like that sold at a home store.
I would say at three weeks you are secure to mow it. HOWEVER mow it at a very high setting on your lawnmower. Cutting the grass too short hurts the root systems and will exact the grass to die out during the summer hot months. The taller the grass the deeper the roots grow. I would say that you would want to see about a 3 to 4 inch towering blade of grass and that will allow you to water less and hold a greener healthier yard. Also sort sure your blade is somewhat sharp on your mower, when they dull out they break the grass instead of cutting the grass and it leaves a jagged boundary on the grass which browns out the tips which makes the yard look unhygienic. You can use a metal file or a bench grinder or even a hand held grinder of sorts and of late follow the factory edge as your guide
Answers: Water: You should have watered day by day for the first 2 wks averaging 1/4 of an inch. After that. water 1/2" twice a week for an additional 2wks.. Then hose down deeply depending on natural rainfall for 1/2" per week.
Fertility: Do not fertilize till slop as summer fertilizers can harm new sod. Be sure the fertilizer is rate for your TYPE of sod.
Mowing: Determine mower timing by height of grass not the calender. Cut no more than 1/2" of grass at a time. If you want 4" grass, wait till it is 4.5", next mow.
