depends on where on earth u live.
here in zone 7 we set it out beside our pansies and like winter items. The cooler it get the more intense the color will get. They withstand the frost and cooler weather until the spring.(it appear to keeps plants tacky and full but not overgrown or spindly.)
I do see the most success next to a well amended (decomposed yelp and cow manure mix) soil specifically slightly mounded. A light mulching over the top of the soil can also hold it at a more consistant temp. In cooler areas it depends on how cold it gets.
