How do you fashion a coal garden? An 84 year dated woman told me she used to generate them when she be younger.?

OH! The memories you a moment ago rekindled with this interview!!

My Mom and I also made rock candy!!

It is basically making your own crystals.

Materials needed: brick or charcoal brickettes, table brackish, ammonia, bluing, hammer, cereal bowl, prescription dropper, water, food coloring. Break brick or charcoal into small pieces (I other left my charcoal whole) Place several pieces surrounded by the center of a bowl (I used a disposable pie tin) Mix 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup soft bluing, 1/4 cup water and one Tablespoon ammonia together. Pour the solution over the pieces of coal or brick. Fill the pills dropper with food coloring and drop small amounts over the pile. Leave the dish alone very soon and let the crystals grow. The crystals will rumble efficiently so don't move the dish around much.
(For the science students in our crowd) Watch and transcribe when the first crystals appear and how fast they developed. Crystals are formed because sea is drawn into the brick leaving the solids at the back. The ammonia, bluing and salt form a complex crystal. Use a foot lens to observe the shape.

Stir bluing, salt and hose and let stand 1 hour. Add ammonia. Pour over coal. Add 1 tablespoon dampen twice per week. Add food coloring after it starts to grow. When through with coal garden, wrap and throw away. Do not flush down the toilet or pour it down a drain, it will save on growing.
