I have two lovely rhododendrons. On one side of the porch it can grow as tall as it wishes but on the other side it is in front of a window so I don't want it to receive tall. I've been adjectives it down to just below the level of the fanlight every summer after it blooms. The foliage of this one is AMAZING, just gorgeous, but it doesn't have an overabundence of flowers. It have flowers, just not tons of them. I've tried dead heading it, but I'm not sure exactly how I should be doing this. If I cut the intact tip of the stem off, I'm also cutting sour some new growth and I hate to do that. Should I newly be taking off the thin tendril that were the flower? Also, WHEN is the best time to dead leader? I always do it after it blooms but it might be several WEEKS after. Should I do it right after it flowers?
I'm not much of a gardner but I do LOVE my rhodos!
Answers: Deadheading is good for the rhodo and must be done hastily after it blooms. You can carefully cut or pinch out just the flower and in attendance should be a little developing bud left astern. If you cut off the tip of the branch you are losing a flower next year. If you trim the shrub, do it right after it flowers and never more than 1/3 of the branches surrounded by a single season. Good luck with your rhodos.
You have to prune them right after they flower or you're adjectives next years blooms off. By pruning them straight after they flower you're encouraging more blooms for next year.
