I would like to prevent them from doing so surrounded by the most natural agency possible.
Answers:    I bet that its actually grasshoppers intake your basil. We had a central infestation a few years ago. There are several ways to go, some slow, some hurried, some extremely toxic and some more gentle.
The slow soft way is next to stuff called Nolo bait, it is a biological insecticide which will with the sole purpose affect the grasshopper, not the birds or cats or whatever else may chomp through the insect. Diatomatious Earth is also non toxic, but dont breath too much, and probably faster than Nolo. It is made from crushed teeny tiny ancient sea creatures which shred up the insides of hard shelled insects when eat. Turkeys are my favorite solution, they dont scratch and get through voraciously. Also, if you can create a cool and wet environment, not so much what basil adore, the grasshoppers can not metabolize and slow down their eating tremendously.

Of course within are hardcore, toxic chemicals that one can choose, but they are awful for the entire food chain including the soil which is the underside of nutrition for all beings on the planet....bright and breezy decision making!!
There is a spray call liquid seven . Mix a tablespoon beside a gallon of water. Spray adjectives plants making sure to cover all of plant from top to bottom. Sagurate soil around plant. Do this every 14 days. Go by directions on container for acquire time.
