How big is your rooftop and how are you planning making it work?

Answers: providing you have the depth of soil (medium) you can grow anything you can grow in a ordinary garden
There are loads of different vegetables you can grow surrounded by pots and tubs. Here are just a few of the veggies that I grew that instrument last summer:
Kidney Beans
Broad Beans
Carrots (if you buy a round variety)
Tomatoes
Spinach (grows approaching a weed in a pot)
Potatoes
Lettuce
Garlic
All variety of herbs grow really powerfully in pots
Peas
As for making the roof garden to get going with, I'm assuming you live within a flat (or similar) so make sure you enjoy the authority of your landlord to create the garden within the first place!
There are some really good websites out nearby which will help you - try gardenweb.com, they enjoy forums for just something like any type of garden and plant you can think of.
