I own had right luck gently lifting bad the top layer of soil near either a plastic fork or an aged silverware fork I don't plan on using anymore. I just toss the elderly soil and fungus into the trash. Gently stir up about 1/4 inch of the remaining soil near the fork and add some untried potting soil on top. Water as usual.
