I am starting a compost heap and I know snakes are attracted to them. How can I keep hold of snakes away from it? Snakes are my biggest fear.
Are you sure they are snakes that are attracted to compost heaps? I enjoy a large compost mound and I have around 5 slow-worms living in it which are lizards and totally safe.
Yes, snakes can be attracted to compost heaps... they resembling the warmth, and if mice etc grasp into the heap they walk in after them.
You can encase the area beside very fine rope like chicken lead only smaller. We achieve it here in Australia sold as snake proof flex. Or, use one of those enclosed plastic compost bins next to a lid and keep the nouns around it clear of grass and weeds etc so you can see if anything is lurking.
Answers: I built a compost bin second year. I haven't seen any snakes around it however. While I understand your fearfulness, snakes are very useful in the garden. They hang on to the rodent population down. Keep the area around your mountain clean of weed and tall grass. That is your best bet.
