Answers:    You can do it immediately, just cut it to the ground, and subsequent spring it will shoot back up again

I prune mine surrounded by the spring. The dead flower spikes stay on surrounded by the winter. I have have mine for years and it looks better each year. Prune down to two thirds of it's size.
