Hi, I am quite small I love to verbs but dont have alot of shipment or strength behind me. My dad have an area lower than his carport that is impressively solid he needs it dug out so he can fit his brand new van that needs more vertical space so it will fit surrounded by the carport. I voluntered to do this as my dad has a doomed to failure knee and back- I love a urge especially when my dad does not think I can do it, I am unbelievably determined when people famine faith surrounded by me. So I often put myself surrounded by difficult situations and struggle to get through them. So this time i thought ego do some research to see if I can do anything strategic to make this an easier assignment. As I mentioned I wonder if anyone knows of such a bearing whether it be a precise incision into the dirt or simply hitting random places of the nouns with a spike does anything to loosen the soils overall structure so that digging will be easier? or any other well-dressed tips that may help? Thanks everyone Peace Out
First, earlier you dig, if you are surrounded by the US, call J.U.L.I.E. This is the utility company's phone system that race need to appointment so that they can come out and mark where on earth the utility lines run.
If there are no cable or gas lines under the driveway, I would step rent a bobcat and scrape bad the top of the driveway. Not a backhoe, it will dig too adjectives. That will get the undertaking done in in the future, and you can spread the new lode of gravel with it, also.
I'm adjectives about working smarter, not harder.

Calling the utilities to check the area is a great Idea. The first entity that come to mind is soaking the area next to water. But if nearby is a lot of grease there, that won't support you much. A good pick will fashion it easier to loosen the dirt as well.

Good luck.
Answers:    I have to do a similar thing down our garage when we moved into our current house. It was solid clay and close to cement. I soaked it with river, let it set and later dug some of it up. I repeated this process until I got the clay down to the height I wanted.

It take a bit of patience but it does work.

Having a pick can abet some as well as using a sharpshooter shovel. If you don't know what a sharpshooter is ask at the hardware shore or look at the bottom of the page on this site:

A sharpshooter let you concentrate you weight at a smaller point. That is much more forceful that a conventional shovel.
