HELP! My backyard is covered surrounded by vines as tacky as trees!? I recently bought a house and the backyard is a big mess...
I recently bought a house and the backyard is a big mess of completely overgrown vines. Every weekend I'm out there chopping and pulling, adjectives and yanking, tugging and cursing ;). The vines can run literally from one side of the yard to the other, adjectives tangled together. Can I simply rent a roto-tiller and turn over the entire yard or do I really hold to fight the vines until there is a clear beater (hopefully me).
I see 3 possibilities...
Chemicals
Physical removal
Goats
The choice depends on what your location and budget allow.
The rototiller perception could make it worse if the chopped up plant parts take root and whip over.
Thoreau said, " There are thousands hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."
He wasn't talking in the region of an invasive plant, but the advice is still sound. Find the root and verbs it.
I know EXACTLY how this feel! This was my backyard when I purchased my period home, masses years ago. Here is the way to break it down to keep you from inkling overwhelmed. Every day, give yourself a 10-20 foot clause - whatever you are comfortable doing. The key beside vines is to get to the main plant. Pick of latest growth and trace back to the root. Chances are you will find the vine stalk going in several directions from the source. Dig beneath the root and pull the entire plant up. Gather the many arms and wrap around the plant close to a bundle. Toss in the yardwaste bin. Do this as many times as you enjoy the energy for. It took me two weeks to get control of my patio, but it was worth it.
The only alternative is spraying the integral thing with a season long woody herbicide. But that approach you lose an entire season for getting the bones established in your garden (architectural plants that create the backdrop for everything else). Why postpone health?
If you wish, you can just clear a sector and plant it, then move to the next.
Answers: Tilling may not get to the core of the mess. You could use it to get the trailers loose.
When we have to clear our back yard, my hubby and I dug down vast enough to get to the root globe, stuck a rock bar under them and leveraged them out.
We still have the trailers to pull but without the root globe to cling to, the trailers were easier to pull.
I discern your pain! You will be the winner ultimately - a moment ago have to keep on truckin'
Best to you :)
