Growing sunflower seed? My family is have a Competition who can grow the tallest...
My family is have a Competition who can grow the tallest sunflower starting off next to just a pip. So any tips would be nice like how much sun they have need of and what to water them next to.
Thanks
Answers: Start the seed directly surrounded by the ground(sunflowers don't transplant well) Full sun.all time if possible and fertilize every couple weeks next to some Mircle Grow when you water. Mulch around the bed of the plant to hold in moisture and hold on to the soil cooler in hot weather. You may own to stake the plant unless there are others around it, or the crisscross may take it down. Also, your choice of sunflower pip type will affect the size. I think the striped seed like you nurture to the birds grow larger than the "black oil" variety that also are feed to birds. But either of these would be a correct choice versus some of the more decorative types you can buy.
Put your stake surrounded by early and be sure it is high enough. Adding it latter will trash the roots of a mature plant. I also similar to the striped ones but for the best results buy them in a packet, within the garden center of your local Wal Mart ect instead of picking through the bird feed for them. They are bred to grow larger and are much better seed. Also check the date on the seed packet to be sure they are fresh and not finishing years seed. Good Luck!
