we have a lovely greengage tree, it have produced a good crop of fruit for the ultimate few years but this year it has have no blossom.so no fruit. What could be the reason for this
Answers: Amy have missed the point, you had no blossom for this reason pollination is irrelevant. The causes could be any one of copious, including frost, high wind, or other extreme weather at the critical time. Birds, especially the lovely Bullfinch, can strip the blossom from a tree in no time, or the tree may be lower than stress from some other cause resembling a fungal infection.
It is also possible that you pruned wrongly.
Attached is a link to a accurate article on them - the relevant point is this one, though:
"True greengage trees cannot pollinate themselves and need to grow hard by other European plum trees to bear fruit (whence my kith and kin tree's meager cropping). Walking through his orchard, Mr. Breil pointed out three of those plum varieties ¡ª Stanley, Monsieur and Royale de Montauban ¡ª interspersed to ensure proper pollination of the greengages."
I am guessing that one of your neighbors changed their landscape and removed their plum trees, and thus your pollinators. So to ensure fruit next year, invest within one of the three varieties cited above and plant it somewhere on your property so your greengage plum will achieve the pollen it needs!
