I have italian cypress trees, established and up to 30'+. I purchased this home one year ago and suddenly the trees are drooping and spliting at the top. They are green and fighting fit looking. Can I top them to get them subsidise into shape (my gardner thinks they enjoy been topped contained by the past). I'm wondering if I am overwatering? How can I tell if in that is root rot and if so can I save them?
Answers:    If they be topped previously then it's possible that the trees own developed a disease or other problem at the point where they be topped (topping trees is NOT a recommended horticultural habit). If they indeed were topped, next the location where they be cut can provide an entrance point for bugs, and could also be the cause of the splitting. I would recommend have a licensed arborist come out and take a look at them. (Re-topping them will not cure the problem.)
