English Boxwood Help Needed? We have over a dozen English Boxwoods surrounded by our front yard...
We have over a dozen English Boxwoods surrounded by our front yard that are at tiniest 50 years old. About 5 years ago, some inhabitants offered to pay us for some clippings to use within crafts. Well, they really clipped away and left the bushes mis-shaped and next to gaping holes in the middle. It have taken 5 years for the gaps to cram back within and to look half road decent. Last year we notice that some of the boxwoods have like mad of dead limb and are starting to appear as if they are dying. Is there any type of mixture we can nurture them to give them a boost? We really want to preserve these prehistoric bushes.
I think I would spent the money for a professional evaluation and pruning and safekeeping plan . . . ..
I hope it isn't box blight http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles080...
You might be OK if you are contained by the US, this may be a UK/Euro only point.
More likely though is that the plants are losing get-up-and-go - especially if they are getting on in age and are regularly human being pruned. Why not take some cuttings only in satchel (assuming the plant is otherwise healthy)? It's incredibly easy to do and you will enjoy a new contemporaries of plants genetically identical to the parents - and so a perfect clash.
Answers: Hi:
I am sorry to hear about your Boxwoods and ill-fatedly the people that took the clippings didn't apprehend the concept of pruning.
I am a landscaper and designer. Boxwoods are known to acquire leggy as they age. It is also common for abundant dead branches to appear as they own reached their later life. I am not sure of your geographic location, but in spring and dive, add some six month nitrogen slow release fertilizer to respectively shrub. Only add a small amount. Keep them watered and don't trim anything immediately. You can remove some of the dead branches. What you are trying to do is see start the plants from their root systems. I hope this helps some as 50 year out-of-date plants are a treasure.
I will link you to the site map of my website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that may help out you in this situation or any other improve need. I will also interconnect you to the gallery of plants section. There is a page on Boxwoods. Good luck to you and hold a great day!
