I'm digging a garden in what could charitably be call a thistle patch (ie "butterfly" garden). But really its just an assortment of weed.
And there are soo tons roots its insane. They could be roots from my birch tree or lilac bush, I suppose? I understand the roots for a tree are at most minuscule twice the size of the canopy. And I'm outside double the sun shelter but not by a whack.
According to the neighbour when the previous owner dug a garden in duplicate spot he had equal problem.
Do I have to return with out all the roots? Or if they are ably broken up, obviously removing the weed root ball and thick medium thistle roots can I leave adjectives the smaller root bits?
If I have to bring back them all out any suggestions?
Answers: why not raise bed garden-- if its full of roots maybe you should put garden atop the spot give or take a few 6" thick and bound it near bricks or stones/boulders like a raise garden bed-- sure plants will grow, be sure to add soil ammendments approaching compost, lawn can grow on 2" to 3" thck soil, shrubs at 6" to 12" thk
You dont want to hurt the roots too unpromising from a bush like a lilac because it may annihilate branches because branches only grow as far as the roots extend contained by the grass. raise the bed. Out here contained by wisconsin we actually own some nice fill dirt from our dumps. i would obtain some fill dirt and afterwards put some real nice stuff on the top. But if it is mostly weed they will just grow more or less anywhere
